Four-Year Plan Goals

Goal One: To develop a program that would introduce and familiarize the students and teachers at the High School of Art and Design with the contemporary art scene.

Goal Two: To ensure all students are proficient in the most up to date computer-based arts software programs used in industry today.

Goal one: In order to improve the more conceptual aspect to student's artistic expression, the school engages in a four year partnership with Abrons Arts Center that provides a series of professional development sessions, in-class residencies and museum visits that focus on a different contemporary art topic each year.  Starting in Year Three, the school places an added focus on arts integration incorporating in-class residencies and professional development sessions for the teachers of two English classes a year.

Goal Two: In order to ensure that students receive instruction in the most up-to-date computer software, ETA purchases a year long subscription to lynda.com for all arts teachers for each of the four years to take the lessons on their own time.

Goal One:  Abrons Arts Center

Goal Two: After trying out a few other vendors the school decided that lynda.com has the breadth of training and the flexibility that works best for them.

Goal One: Participating teachers will be better equipped to include contemporary artists' work as inspiration and motivation in their classes enhancing their curriculums. As a result, students will be able to investigate bigger questions in art, understand that problem-solving and process are equally as important as creating a final product, discuss contemporary art with peers and find validity in conceptual contemporary art forms.

Goal Two: All students will be able to use the software programs required for their major at industry levels and teachers will be versatile and adept at teaching the skills and have access to the resources to stay up to date.

"The excitement of the English department as they participated in bringing visiting teaching artists into their classes underlined the importance of integrating the arts into the curriculum. It has strengthened the belief that students, especially students in an art school, learn better when they can also incorporate art into other disciplines such as English. The programming to build planning sessions into the day to meet and plan greatly improved communication and planning amongst teachers. Because of this, the art department was able to have several collaborations amongst various majors over the year. We hope that this will continue and expand to include math teachers as well as social studies teachers in the future."
